This article covers how to clone data in Metrics from one item in a list to another item. It is very useful to duplicate a Product and all its data or even initialize a Country's data based on existing data.

Table of Contents

Warning:

It’s important to note that this is irreversible.  This means once data is transferred from the Metrics of one item to another, it can’t be reverted and the old data will be lost.  Please make sure to view all the affected Metrics in the Clone data modal before confirming the cloning of data.

How does it work?

The true power of the Clone feature is that it works with any List Item of your Application and in no more than a few clicks. There are some things to know first:

  • Data is cloned from one item (source item) to another one. It means that you need to create an item before copying data over it.

  • Data is cloned for each Metric that uses the Dimension List and is not calculated by formula. The list of Metrics impacted are provided during the action and lists every Metric using the Dimension without explicitly stating the ones calculated by a formula and the ones which have inputs.

  • Data is cloned inside the Application where the action takes place. It means that even if a Dimension is shared, this action won't impact Metrics outside the Application.

  • Data is cloned based upon the Access Rights of the user initiating it. The clone data will only be applied to the Metrics that the user has write permissions for.  For example, if a Product Dimensions is used in 10 Metrics but the user initiating a copy has only write access to 2 of those Metrics, only those 2 Metrics will be impacted.

How do you use it?

There are 2 ways of performing this action: from the List itself or from the Block Explorer.

From the List

  1. Click on "Edit list" at the top left of the List.
  2. Next select the option button "..." next to the item you wish to copy.
  3. Click on "Clone data to...".
  4. The source item ("From") will be automatically filled, you can then select a destination item ("To") and click "Next".
  5. In the next screen, you will be able to review the list of impacted Metrics. Click on "Show Metrics" to see more. Once reviewed, click on "Clone data".
  6. Done! The copy will be ready shortly.

From the Block Explorer

  1. From the Block Explorer, click on "More Actions" on the top right of the Block list.

  2. Select the option button "..." next to the item you wish to copy.

  3. Click on "Clone data to...".

  4. Select the Dimension List that contains the items you want to copy.

  5. Select the source item ("From") and the destination item ("To") and click on "Next".

  6. In the next screen, you will be able to review the list of impacted Metrics. Click on "Show Metrics" to see more. Once reviewed, click on "Clone data".

  7. Done! The copy will be ready shortly.

Interesting to note!
While the first method (from the list) is super adapted to quick cloning, it’s not working when I’m cloning the data in an application that is not part of my data hub. For that you’ll have to do it from the block explorer.
Nice to know it impacts only the application you’re in though - so you can always measure the impact of this action.
