At Pigment, we understand how important colors are. We love our Pigment colors and understand our users love their company colors. This article discusses how to create a custom palette for your workspace, where you can use the palette, and how you can introduce color specific visualizations into your data.
What is a custom Color Palette?
Color is a powerful way to draw attention to data points, whether you use it in a grid or in a chart. The custom Color Palette allows you to set a custom theme containing eight different colors, which you can use throughout your Pigment workspace.
This is a workspace level setting, so Members must be a Primary Owner, Security Admin or Workspace Admin to adjust the color palette.
How do you set the Color Palette?
At the workspace level, the Color Palette is located in Settings at the bottom left of the Sidebar.
- In your workspace, click Settings.
- Click Color & Images to see the current Palette.
- Click Edit palette.
- Enter a Hexadecimal (Hex) code and custom name for each new color you need.
Hex codes require 6 digits, and you can enter custom names for your chosen colors. - Click Save when you’re done.
When you update the colors in the palette, the color order impacts how they are used in charts. The first color at the top of the list is applied to the first item within a chart, and then the second color for the second item, and so on.
If you decide to change a color after your color palette has been configured and applied to your workspace, the newly changed color replaces the original color automatically.
The original colors in the custom palette are :
- Color 1 #3965FF

- Color 5 #6B1CB0
- Color 6 #1B2970
- Color 7 #C2DFFA
- Color 8 #D0FACA
Not sure where to find Hex codes?
Do a search for Color Picker in Google. Google’s color picker displays the color spectrum, and corresponding Hex codes, to help you pick out the correct color.
Where can you use these new colors?
Grids
Your new palette can be used in formatting cells, backgrounds and headers. It can also be used for conditional formatting.
Warning
Workspace admins can also edit the Color Palette here. It’s important to remember these changes are applied across the entire workspace. Any updates to a color are applied everywhere that color is used.
Charts
You can apply your color palette to your charts by selecting Format and then selecting a color theme, located under Style. The custom color palette is easy to find, it shares the same name as your workspace.
When applying the custom palette as the color theme, the order in which the colors are entered will determine the color of the items. The first color at the top of the list is applied to the first item within a chart, and then the second color for the second item, and so on. The colors restart after every eight items.
Individual Items in Charts
You can adjust each individual item's color in a chart.
To edit a chart,:
- Click Edit beside Series colors, located under Style.
- Assign each item its own individual color.
Pigment retains the order of your selection if you switch through different Color themes. For example, if you assign an item the first color in a palette, it remains the first color regardless of which theme you select.

Chip Colors
When you have a cell with a Dimension data type, or when the Pivot Pane displays a Dimension for a specific Metric, you see items enclosed in a colored capsule. In Pigment, we call this capsule a chip. By default, chips are displayed in the colors available in Pigment palette. However you can use the workspace color palette to adjust the color of all the chips in a workspace.
Users must have an Account Type of Workspace admin to toggle this functionality on. It will be turned on for all Applications within the Workspace.
- Open the Settings Page from an Application or the Workspace home page
- Navigate to Formatting
- Turn on the toggle for Apply Workspace colors palette for Dimension Items chips
Color Code your Dimension List Items
To apply new Dimension List item colors, you need the Can Configure Blocks permission.
After you enable your brand color palette, you can take your data personalization even further: apply your own choice of colors to items within a Dimension list.
Let’s say you’ve a Dimension List with 3 statuses: To Do, On Hold, and Done. By assigning 3 distinctive colors from your color palette, each status instantly stands out and is easily identifiable!
When you apply specific colors to these items, you’re creating a new Number type Property in the Dimension List called Display Color. Display Color displays the selected color for each item, and uses its assigned number from the color palette.
This Property behaves like any other Property in Pigment that is a Number type. When you perform a sort, the colors are sorted in either ascending or descending numerical values. Also, each property value of the newly assigned color can be used in formulas.
Remember, you don’t need to use colors for everything, so use them wisely!
Here’s how you can start using colors in your Dimension Lists:
- Open your required Dimension list.
- Click Manage Items.
This displays a column called Color at the start of your Dimension list, with each row containing a colored circle. - Click any colored circle in this list to start creating a color property for your Dimension items, and then click Continue.
- In the Color column, double click a colored circle to select a color from the palette for each Dimension List item.
If you decide not to assign a new color property to a Dimension item, the original assigned color from the Pigment palette is used by default.
All usages of these Dimension list items update across your application, displaying their newly assigned colors. - (Optional) If you want to remove the assigned colors to the item in your list, delete the Display Color property column.
